The human brain favours routine, comfort and familiarity and when our lifestyles flip and our days become completely different to their usual, it’s only natural that the way we think, view and feel about ourselves and our personal style can take a hit too. Here are 8 feel good ways to lift your personal style right now, minimum time and energy required.

The human brain favours routine, comfort and familiarity and when our lifestyles flip and our days become completely different to their usual, it’s only natural that the way we think, view and feel about ourselves and our personal style can take a hit too.

While we’re in this moment of lockdowns and restrictions, remember this is temporary and you don’t have to be functioning at your usual level, you don’t need to be getting dressed like you usually would perfecting a loungewear outfit or living up to the outfit standards of social media.

Here are 8 feel good ways to lift your personal style right now, minimum time and energy required:

1. Put on a pair of jeans

Just for today, switch out of the active wear or tracksuit pants and wear a simple jeans and tee combination. Jeans are easiest to do this with because you can still wear your basic tee, cardigan or jumper.

2. Wear an outfit combination that makes you feel put together

This doesn’t have to be super dressy or what you would usually wear to work or a social event; it just has to make you feel more put together today, even if it’s just for a few hours. The aim is to avoid a cycle of baggy tracksuits and worn out tees day after day.

3. Steam or iron your clothes, even if they don’t have obvious creases

The steam refreshes the fibres, making the garment feel more vibrant and lively. It’s a little like making your bed in the morning, it’s the first task of getting dressed completed, giving a sense of accomplishment and pride, great for the brain and mindset.

4. Paint your nails in a colour that will work across your outfits

Have a think about what colours you usually wear and choose a nail polish shade that will compliment them. If you tend to wear mostly neutrals, you might want a bright red or a crisp white. If you enjoy wearing more coloured items either bright shades or more muted tones, a creamy nude or deep rose will compliment easily. This is also a nice way to take notice of your overall wardrobe colour palette.

5. Wear some shoes

This completes an outfit and while they might not be as comfortable as a pair of slippers or socks, they’ll give your outfit a definite finish. A pair of slides, sneakers or a slip on loafer of espadrilles are perfect for days at home and require minimum effort to slip on and off.

6. Add an accessory

This could be a simple pair of your favourite studded earrings or a minimalistic necklace. It could even be as simple as remembering to put your wedding or engagement ring on. It could be wearing a cool hat or a beautifully knitted beanie on your daily walk.

7. Add a layer

Something simple and comfortable, like a stylish cardigan, puffer jacket or vest or a soft denim jacket.

8. Do your washing, but make it therapeutic

Similar to steaming your clothes, the cleansing factor here feels refreshing and once complete, gives that same sense of accomplishment and pride. To make it feel more therapeutic, use a detergent you enjoy the scent of (eucalyptus is always a nice choice), hang your items out in the fresh air, steam or iron them before placing them into your wardrobe and put them on clothes hangers that match. Take notice of what items you’re continually washing, these are a good indication of what your individual wardrobe staples are.

Remove the pressure from your wardrobe and instead focus on what you can do right now to lift how you feel about your daily dressing and personal style when your lifestyle has changed. Embrace the simplicity of this time and take small actions to shift your mindset and feel more in control of your personal style.
